When I first started thinking about creating my channel on YouTube last Fall, I thought the modularity of the Insta360 ONE R would be the right solution, partly because I thought it would be neat to create videos using 360 degree footage, plus many people were raving about the image quality. But after a single weekend with the device, selfie stick, and modular sections of lenses, etc. I found it to be way too cumbersome of a workflow in the field as well as post production (in part due to proprietary video format).
I immediately returned it and after more research, purchased the GoPro Hero 9 Black, which launched on Sept. 16th but wasn't available for purchase when I began researching vlogging cameras to use for creating Heavy Nature content. I received the GoPro at the end of Oct. just in time for my 53rd birthday and to hit the ground running... er, I mean, hiking ;)
With the action camera, I also bought the GoPro Media Mod casing which provides improved audio capabilities, and I also purchased a 3-way expandable grip mount made by GoPro. The grip mount has been integral to the footage I capture on the trails because of the easily deployable unfolding of the grip to reach an arms-length selfie distance as well as the built-in small tripod base that inverts and screws into the base. When not in use, I slide one handle of the collapsed mount over the chest strap of my backpack and there it sits ready to grab and record at a moment's notice.
With this setup, I am able to quickly capture video footage, either aiming the camera at what I see, or at me for commentary, plus being able to set it up on a tripod base for capturing b-roll footage, etc.
One of my most favorite features of the GoPro Hero9, besides capturing stabilized 4k video, is the ability to start and stop recording via voice control. Makes it nearly effortless to capture footage on the go.
The GoPro Hero9 Black has exceeded all of my expectations for creating video content for the Heavy Nature channel on YouTube. I highly recommend this setup combination for anyone who needs to record video and audio while on the move.
